Designing Democracy: Rebranding the Danish State

Since the 1990s, Kontrapunkt has played a central role in shaping the visual identity of Denmark’s public and governmental institutions. At the heart of this effort lies a surprising transformation: turning the royal crown—once a symbol of monarchy—into an icon of modern democracy. In this talk, Bo will share how Kontrapunkt embraced Danish self-irony, modesty, and a deep respect for plurality to build a decentralized design system for government ministries. The result is a uniquely Danish approach to state branding—less about uniformity, more about coherence through character—standing in contrast to the rigid, centralized systems seen in many other nations.
