Hiroyuki Masuda is an Executive Type Director at Morisawa Inc.
Since 1989, he has been engaged in the design of Japanese typefaces at TypeBank Co., Ltd. He has developed a wide range of fonts, including general-purpose fonts such as the “TB Gothic” series, as well as more unique creations like “Teyandei”—a typeface that blends elements of Gothic (sans serif) style with Edo-period lettering, drawing on his background in calligraphy. He has also created custom fonts for corporate digital signage.
After TypeBank’s merger with Morisawa Inc., he continued his work in typeface development while also dedicating himself to mentoring younger type designers.
In 2012, he took part in designing variant kana characters (hentaigana) for the “IPA Mincho” typeface issued by the Information-technology Promotion Agency (IPA), contributing to the international standardization of hentaigana.
He holds a Level 1 Master Certificate in Practical Calligraphy and is a certified instructor at the Japan Calligraphy School.
Being a half-Japanese and half-Chinese who has lived within polarizing cultures, Karin is interested in exploring how culture affects typography.
At Morisawa, she plays a role supporting the development of Latin and Japanese typefaces, facilitating the integration of cultural nuances into design decisions.
Yuka Shinada joined Morisawa Inc. in 2018. Leveraging her prior experience working with global teams, she has been involved in a variety of domestic and international projects, including global promotions in the United States.
In 2019, she served as the local committee leader for the ATypI conference, which was held in Tokyo for the first time. In 2024, she organized a multilingual typography exhibition as part of Singapore Design Week.
Through her experiences in the type community, she is building a constructive framework that bridges designers and platformers, aiming to foster the sustainable growth of the industry.
